The Ask:

The Process

This analysis was completed in Spring 2023 as part of the Twentieth Century Fashion course. The project involved an in-depth study of Ralph Lauren's 2012 Spring Ready-to-Wear show, examining its design elements and sources of inspiration. Using the VOGUE archives, I conducted a visual analysis of the collection and complemented it with research into Ralph Lauren’s history, creative vision, and design philosophy. This research provided insights into his inspirations and design choices, which I compiled into a comprehensive and cohesive analysis document (see bottom of this page).

Inspiration

The event that inspired Ralph Lauren’s collection was the 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The film/novel follows along the journey of main character Jay Gatsby, whose mission is to be reunited with his previous love, Daisy Buchanan. One of the major themes in The Great Gatsby is the “American Dream”. This identifies why the Ralph Lauren brand has such a connection to the story. Seen in his other collections, Lauren commonly used ‘20’s fashion for inspiration in his designs.
